VISUAL POETRY / BIOGRAPHICAL MAPPING, 2018

The Geopoem Series is an intermedia visual poetry work based on geolocation and biography. The series converges diagrams, video, sound, geolocation systems, and Haiku.

The core of this work is based on considering biography through space instead of time. Instead of thinking about a chronology of events, I create diagrams with the coordinates of the locations where important experiences occurred; the precise coordinates become the “verses” of each poem, each poem revealing a specific cluster of data. Each verse is written over the paper in analogy to the location of its coordinate on the diagram based on Mercator map. In this work, the poetry can only be reached in the landscapes of the experience it evokes.

The Geopoem Series Diagrams

Cristiane Bouger, 2018

In The Geopoem Series life is fully taken as part of the oeuvre, allowing space for the viewers to reflect upon their own experiences and existential maps.

Although coordinates replace the verses in my geopoems, one exception is made for Thirteen Unspoken Epiphanies, in which I write a haiku dedicated to each epiphany / location. At the side of this geopoem the viewer finds a tablet display opened on Google Earth. This allows the viewer to explore the cartography of each epiphany with accuracy by selecting the coordinates to access the location that inspired each haiku. The geopoem acquires then another layer of visibility. The spatiality of the geopoem is amplified, while viewers can also look for the coordinates that marked their own life.

GEOSONIC HAIKU

The geosonic haiku are created from soundscapes of mapped experiences, and edited in a structure of 5 sec, 7 sec, 5 sec, summing up an audio of 17 seconds, instead of a poem of
17 syllables.
